Avira anti-virus is probably the best you can get for free, second only to Avast. AVG free has no rootkit protection and very poor detection rates. If you are safe on the internet, free is all you need. Avira free offers great protection, Kaspersky just offers a bit more. I've seen people get infected with Kaspersky too, so none of them are 100%. It's more about how safe you are than anything.
Avira free and Avast free also have rootkit protection and update by themselves.
EDIT: I use Avast free edition, and I've seen it stop Trojans cold in their tracks. "You get what you pay for"......wrong, that's a myth. Most companies put out their products to get you to buy the one with full protection, like a firewall included. You don't need the extra protection if you already have a firewall, or are extremely safe on the internet.
