    It could be the path to the game in the registry is wrong or missing.
    Click the Windows start buton, select, run, type regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Battlefield 2
    There should be a line that says InstallDir and the path will be under data, default is C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2

    You can check what Battlefield 2 Version you have on the login screen.

    If you have v1.4 or below you have to install 1.41 before 1.50
    You can also change the version number in the registry which should let you install the patch, but the game may not work properly.
    Go into registry and change version to 1.41 (Right click on Version, select Modify)
    For 32bit Windows it's under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2
    For 64bit Windows it's under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Electronic Arts\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2
