The song is so hauntingly beautiful. The girl singing I believe is Lisa Hannigan and she's part of the band.

well to me it kinda meant like falling for someone while you're still with someone else and feeling guilty/bad about it
leave me out with the waste this is not what i do
it's the wrong kind of place to be thinking of you
it's the wrong time for somebody new
it's a small crime and i got no excuse
I think this song is about his partner finding out about an affair, he's thinking about someone else at the wrong time because he's in a relationship. It's a small crime and I got no excuse means that what he's done isn't really a big deal but he still feels really guilty, and he knows that whatever he says couldn't make up for cheating, he really has no excuse for doing that.
"and is that alright yeah?
i give my gun away when it's loaded
is that alright yeah?
if you don't shoot it how am i supposed to hold it?"
Basically saying that she's not what he needs, this could even be taken to mean that she doesn't fulfill him sexually, so he had an affair... if she's not gonna sleep with him then he's gonna sleep with someone else. Or it could also mean he doesn't have feelings for her any more. Saying "is that alright, yeah?" is kinda rhetorical, obviously it's not gonna be alright
leave me out with the waste this is not what i do
This line suggests he feels bad about what he's done because he's not really a bad person
it's the wrong kind of place to be cheating on you
it's the wrong time she's pulling me through
it's a small crime and i got no excuse
"she's pulling me through" could refer to whoever he had an affair with, maybe he has feelings for her and this could mean that even though what he's doing is wrong it feels right anyway because he loves her.
I also think this because in my mind this song links to Accidental Babies.
