I dont know what your problem is. Make sure you saved the dota file in the proper downloads folder, and not just randomly with the other game files.
Also, the patch should automatically download for you when you try to connect to battlenet. You should not have to download it manually and winrar/winzip it. It should auto download and auto instal upon connecting to battlenet. You dont even need a battlenet account, the second you click battlenet it will start downloading, then it will instal and reset automatically.
The only reason I can think of that it is blinking is you maybe have another program running in the background and its trying to minimize/switch windows. Make sure you dont have norton running a virus scan, or other stupid pop-ups that may be trying to steal your PC's attention.
I have warcraft 3 on my PC with vista and have no problems, so you should be able to get it working sooner or later! Also ensure the patches youve downloaded arent for frozen throne if all you have is rein of chaos.

Try googling parts of the error, that might help.
But with the dota map, I'm assuming you saved it into a seperate
downloads folder? The Non-AI maps will work when saved to that
folder, but for some reason, the AI maps won't. Instead, just find
your Warcraft directory and move the AI map from the downloads
folder and into an exisitng folder, like Frozen Throne etc.

First of all you must re install your warcraft and warcraft frozen throne make sure you don't put any crack or patch if it is original its no problem then go to this website

read it carefully download the
universal patch
and the Upgrade Patch Version 1.20e to 1.21a
then
Warcraft_III_Patch_Fix.zip
and finally the
Patch Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne Full 1.21b”
it must be 1.21b and make sure you read it carefully.
if you want the latest map go to www.getdota.com download the latest map and manually put it into your maps folder usually
C:\program files\Warcraft III\maps\download
