Kubuntu and Ubuntu iso's are less than 700 MB, so use a CD-R.
The iso are 600 something MB.
Most likely your BIOS isn't set to try and boot off of the CD first, before the hard drive. Unfortunately, computer manufacturers have never decided on a standard key to get into the bios menu, so you'll have to try pressing different keys as you start up - f1, f2, f5 and del are common ones. Your computer manual may tell you what it is - it should be available on your manufacturers site somewhere.
The other possibility is that the CD is not actually bootable, which you can test by either:
a) booting it in another computer and/or
b) sticking some other bootable CD in this one
If you do need to update your BIOS, you'll need to find your motherboard's model number and do some googling for the manufacturer, who should have bios updates on their site somewhere.
