   You have to understand the difference between .torrent files (links to other files) and the files (music, movies, etc.) that you download by torrent protocol.
   
   If you don't have a torrent client you can't download via torrent protocol. You can always download the torrent file itself (that's just a link to the actual file you want) without a torrent program. If you're asking if you can download file X, which is available via torrent, without having a torrent program, the answer is "if it's available via a protocol you DO have a program for".
   
   BTW, it's not the torrent program that gives you viruses - it's using it to download files that are infected with viruses. And whether you get those files via torrent, or from a website, or any other way, they're still the same files, so they're still infected with the same viruses. Downloading an infected file from a website won't keep the virus off your computer.
