I'm not sure I understand the question.
You can't download something to an unallocated partition, because if it's unallocated, your OS can't access it. You never said you installed Ubuntu, nor did you install Virtualbox.
You partitioned the hard drive, now you have to burn the Ubuntu .iso to a cd and install it. To do this, place it in the disk drive and reboot. Follow the directions and choose to install it in the allocated space.
I'm not sure why you need Virtualbox, however. If you want to try Ubuntu in a virtual enviroment without installing it, simply install Virtualbox in Vista and mount the Ubuntu iso in Virtualbox's settings.

Vista comes in many flavours - Home Premium, Ultimate, Business, etc. It also comes in varieties for different 'sizes' of processors - 32-bit and 64-bit. I'm guessing you have Home or Home Premium and running the 'standard' 32-bit version.
In short, you probably want the x86 download. Unless you've got a 64-bit processor, 64-bit version of Vista and want to take advantage of the performance increase.
(If you have no idea what 64-bit is and whether you have it or not, it's pretty safe to assume you've got 32-bit... :D )

VirtualBox and VMWare are two different virtual systems so I would download the ISO image and install that through VB,
On the other hand what Linux distro are you using? If it's Ubuntu then you might need to have a look at this
