I wouldn't use the default brushes and art in Illustrator or Photoshop if you are trying to make something unique. I like these websites for finding free stuff:
http://www.vecteezy.com (vectors) and http://www.brusheezy.com (brushes).
http://www.sxc.hu is great for photos, but they also have a lot of illustrations now.
DaFont, like someone else mentioned, is always a great resource.
Another thing I like to do for inspiration is do a Google image search for what I am looking for, then use those ideas to draw my own in Illustrator. That way I have my own original artwork.
