    i think you will need a programmer as well as the software, it is a issue with these pic chips. running simulation is one thing, but actually get it into the pic chip is something else it requires the correct emulation programmer for a specific chip set.
    any one will not do, due to voltages and control lines required to program and some actually need a higher voltage to input the code itself.
    and some need blowing out with a ULTRA Violet light box when the rom chip is of that type.
    erasure can be needed as well a some residual data is contained within as in firmware.

    1) No.

    2) Mosfets will MOST LIKELY be the better choice.

    3) You will have to select the right one for your application yourself. There are thousands out there that could get the job done without any further selection criteria, but by the time you are done filtering for what you really need there might be one or even no device left.

    4) Any Spice simulator will do Mosfet circuits just fine. I like LT Spice aka Switchercad: www.linear.com It's free and works just fine.
