The wiki article on FTP's might help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Transfer_Protocol, there are a lot of resources out there about setting up FTP's.. what operating system do you have on your computer? If you are using Linux this is a lot easier to do than with Windows so I would suggest trying out Linux if you haven't already as you seem to have an interest in things that are normally beyond the "realm" of windows

If you're using Windows, create a new network place - give it your site's FTP address (you can get that from your hosting company if you don't know it). It'll ask for your login and password (ask your hosting company to help you with them if you need help). Map that place as a network drive.

Now you can work on your site as if it was a drive on your computer, opening files, editing them, putting files in that "drive" (that will FTP them to the site).

You can also just use CuteFTP - put in the site's FTP address for the URL, and your username and password. Drag files from left to right to send them from your computer to the site and from right to left to get them from the site to your computer.

ALWAYS maintain at least one completely up to date copy of the site on your computer. (I also keep another one on a flash drive). No matter who your hosting company is, they could go out of business. then you're out of luck unless you have a full backup of the site.
