The HTC Hero will get a firmware update from the current version of 1.5 to the newest version of Android, 2.1. It should be an over-the-air update, meaning you will be able to update right from your phone. It should happen within the next month or so. Taken from Sprint's twitter account: "Android update! Upgrades to 2.1 for Hero/Moment now expected early 2Q10. Currently working through options for upgrades w/ HTC and Samsung." 2Q10 meaning 2nd quarter of this year.
Sprint also says, "OTA vs. PC-based or in-store upgrade are "still TBD upgrade options" referenced in Android 2.1 tweet (working through w/ manufacturers)."
Hopefully they pull through with the 2.1 OTA update soon!

I am sorry to disappoint you, NO the Sense UI will not be coming to the T- Mobile G1.
The HTC Hero has a whole new layout called the Sense UI which those run on the android system. The Donut update(if you are referring to the Sense UI) will not be on any Google branded devices, meaning it will not be on the G1 and the MyTouch. I have seen G1 devices that are hacked running the Sense UI. You can wait for the HTC Hero to come out, bummer though sources say it will be coming to Sprint :(
-Even though the tmobile G1 will not be getting the Sense UI that the HTC Hero has, i am positive that it will be updated with something else(maybe even better), on the Donut update.
Actually it is up to Cellular South to notify you when there is update to your cell phone HTC Hero of Android 2.3. Cellular south has to make sure the software update works on your cell phone and features. It you manually download Android 2.3, you will void your warranty on your cell phone and if anything doesn't work on your cell phone, then you take the risk and blame for your cell phone not functioning.
