And I thank you for your vote of support! To be honest, I do not have any first-hand experience with either of these camcorders and I based my previous answer on what I know about MiniDV/AVI (that's the video format that records at 25 Mbps) and MPEG2. If maintaining the highest quality is your goal, a MiniDV system will be best... at least for consumers. Professional systems have much higher data rates and much higher quality.
Therefore, if I were you, I would go with the MiniDV camcorder and save files (using iLink/FireWire) on your computer as 25 Mbps AVI files. Then you can edit in AVI and convert to MPEG2 when you're ready to burn DVDs. Processing your video that way will give you the highest quality for this type of equipment.
Sorry that I don't know more about these two camcorders. Below is a link to a review of the HC96 on a Web site called Epinions. Epinions does not have a review of the DVD805.
By the way, I am a professional television engineer, and I write about and work with the sort of video gear that professional TV people use. I do not work with much in the way of consumer video gear... only what I have at home.
I hope this helps!

That's not a meaningful comparison. The Canon lens, as you set the things, is tested on a 1Dmk3, the Sigma lens on a 30D. Also, you had them set to different apertures.
Here it is again, both on a 30D and at the same aperture:

1- Comparing different appertures.
2- Comparing a cheap 140$Can Lens with a Canon L Series professional lens:
- 70-200 f2.8 L = 2500$Can
- 14 f2.8 L = 2100$US
Obviously, at those prices the optics are going to be better.
The 50mm f1.8 is popular because it's cheap, fun and has decent image quality but no one beleive that it will outperform a 2000$+ professional grade lens. Obviously, to offer the lens at that price, they cut corners like cheaper glass, plastic mounts, simpler iris system ... the cheaper glass will certainly have an effect on image quality and the 5 blade iris will have an effect on the bokeh.
