Try to reformat your computer!

One factor could be that you are using 4 sticks of ram. Can't overclock as well using 4 sticks versus 2 sticks. Should get 3.6 out of an E8400 easy even with 4 sticks though. I don't know how versed you are at overclocking. I've been OCing everything for years and its takes a little savvy to do it when you wanna clock over 10%. Perhaps this video will help you. Doesn't matter if your board is the same brand. All that matters is that this is overclocking the E8400 on a 750i SLI board. Don't need to disable hardware like the floppy like this guy does if you have that hardware. Just focus on the voltages, multiplier and FSB.

Something to bear in mind is that you should clock your cpu and ram separately and not let the cpu overclock bump the ram up so high you can't run.
I use the same ram as the guy in the video and I only overclock the ram to 1107 when the E8500 cpu is at 3.8 or higher.
Laptop/Notebook computers use stepping to reduce the CPU temperatures, as a continual running fan will drain the battery quickly.
Simply overclocking can be done on Laptop/Notebook by temporarily turning off the power saving devices, but unlike a Desktop computer you can not add a bank of fans or water cooling when you turn the wick-up...
