    Yes - it's perfectly legal. It's illegal for them to use the video or audio to spy on you, but having your usage TRACKED isn't a crime.

    If you aren't comfortable with it, don't use the iPad for personal use. It's just like a work computer - you are using THEIR iPad and have to go by THEIR rules. If they don't like what you're doing with it, either stop doing it or don't use after hours like that.

    If you didn't have rules like this, you would have everyone doing like what that boy did - do things they are supposed to do.

    It is not a violation of your right to privacy, because you don’t have any expectation of privacy while you are using it. They told you that they would monitor your use of the iPad. If they told you that they could monitor the screen at any time, then they can. Same goes for the microphones. It would only be illegal if they didn’t tell you.

    Basically, by using the iPad you are agreeing to the fact that they are able to monitor what you do with it. You only have to use the iPad for homework, anyway. If you use it for anything else, you are implicitly agreeing to let them see that you were using it for something other than schoolwork.

    So, you will just have to turn it off and use your own computer or your family’s computer for non-school-related activities if you don’t want them to be able to watch what you are doing.

    The school bought them and is paying for a data plan. They have a right to monitor their own equipment for appropriate usage. I'm sure before you were issued the iPad, you and/or your parents had to sign an acceptable use policy that plainly laid out the terms you had to abide by and clearly indicated just what was going to be monitored.

    As for not having the right to "spy" on you after school hours, there has been well established precedence that employees can be fired for inappropriate use of company equipment, including laptops, on personal time. By keeping track of websites visited by on their machines using their own data plan, they aren't doing anything wrong.

    If you want to do something online without being monitored, use your own device with your own data plan.
