Registration is the only way to get a working user name. What you are trying to do is like buying a landline phone and expecting to be able to use it without a phone number.

Skype to skype calls are free. Skype to phone calls are not. When you download skype, it gives you one free call to a mobile phone.
About the error message, It only says that because iPod touch doesn't have a camera. Or skype itself is not compatible with the 4.0 ipod touch software, but I'm almost positive it is.
About selling your old iPod to your brother--you can't use skype without a mic. Unless you have a mic, you can't use skype on 1st gen. Also, be aware that 1st gen iPod Touches do not have an external speaker. SO, you NEED earphones with mic (available from apple.com)

It seems that Skype either needs to update their system requirements to state that only Intel is supported or needs to compile 2.8 as a universal binary. They screwed up somewhere.
